Ryan Gosling reteams with his La La Land director Damien Chazelle for First Man, a true story about NASA’s Apollo moon missions in the 1960s. Presenting the days before “one small step” made him a legend, the Armstrong seen here is far from the one seen in history books. Gosling perfectly captures the insecurities of someone who knows he is undertaking the most dangerous mission in human history, one that could very easily end in his death. At the same time, First Man’s visuals are stunning, placing moviegoers at the heart of an event that united the world. Regardless of what you think about the moon landing, First Man is a brilliantly acted, intimate look at Neil Armstrong’s finest hour.
